Getting the Most out of Multiply

by Meg for everyone
You may be wondering to yourself, “How can I get a little privacy around here?”  You’ve heard that Multiply offers privacy, but you’re not sure how to make certain you’re posts are really private. This article will explain how to adjust your privacy settings as well as some things you might want to consider when setting them.

Just tell me what to do
------------------------------

When making a post on your home page, (or when adding pictures or posting a recipe or writing a review...) you'll always be given an option that asks:

(or it will at least look pretty similar to this)

Everyone: Choosing "everyone" means that not only can all of your contacts see your post, and not only can their contacts see it, but everyone in the world who has access to the internet will be able to view your page (should they happen to stumble across it somehow).  Choosing everyone doesn't mean that your web page will be advertised in any way, drawing the world's attention.  It just means that it's accessible to all

This also means that search engines (such as google) will have access to your post and will be able to add it to their search results.  So if you post an article about how to grind your own flour and you set it to be viewable by "everyone", then someone who does a search on google for "grinding flour" may very well come across your page.  This might be exactly what you are looking for.  But if you want to write about something a little more personal, like how your ailing father is doing, you may well want to change the privacy settings a little.

Let me just add, before I move on, that if you want a page to be viewable by friends who are not on Multiply (because you want them to see pics of your new puppy or what have you) then you'll have to set that page to be viewable by "everyone".  Otherwise you'll have to convince them to join Multiply.

Your Network: Choosing "your network" provides some additional options that pop up once you click the "your network" button.

The extra options give you a pretty good sense of what "your network" means.  Not only will your contacts be able to see your post, but their friends/family/coworkers will be able to also as well as their friends/family/coworkers.  (It's important to note, however, that your relationship to an "online buddy" stops with that buddy.  Unlike a friend or cousin or coworker, your online buddy's friends/family/coworkers are not a part of your network.  It is the only relationship choice that works this way - for now at least.)

If you choose to only allow your network to see your post, then no non-multiply people will be able to see it, and no multiply people who are outside of your network will be able to see it.  This choice offers a great deal of privacy while still enabling you to meet new people and share your posts with them.

Your Contacts: Choosing "your contacts" limits the field even more (and it provides a similar set of extra choices as the "your network" option).  Now only people who are directly connected to you will be able to see this post.

Individuals: Choosing "individuals" means that you'll be able to choose specific multiply members to see this post.  This could mean including only a certain subset of your contacts, but it can also involve people who aren't your contacts but who you would like to include in that specific post.

Going back and making changes: You may only now be realizing that there are privacy settings.  If you've already made several posts and now want to go back and change your settings, don't despair.  It's not hard to do.

Go to which ever post you want to alter.  Click on the link to the lower left that says "edit entry."  Underneath the area in which you can make changes to your post will be the same line that's mean mentioned above that asks, "Who should be able to see this journal entry?" Make your modification and click on "Save Changes" at the bottom.  Viola!  You're all set.

How to Decide
---------------------------

But which privacy setting is best for you?  It all depends on what you're hoping to get out of your multiply site.  Multiply can be used in many ways, which is one of its strengths compared to other networking sites. (More on the flexibility of Multiply in a future article.)

You may want to make everything private (either limited to your network or your contacts). But if you're hoping to meet people through Multiply, then you'll want to at least set a few of your articles/pictures/etc. to "everyone" so that when people who are not in your network come to visit your site,  there'll be something there for them to see.  Having nothing at all visible makes a person wonder what you're all about and if you're even still on Multiply.

On the other hand, you may choose to keep everything you post set to "everyone."  Just know that this means everything you post, as well as all of the replies to those posts, will be visible to anyone that comes across them.

Privacy in Multiply Groups and on Other People's Home Pages
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Multiply groups, the privacy settings are ultimately set by the administrator(s) of the group.  They can choose to have everything be public, everything private, or to allow those who post to alter the setting as they choose.  If you are an administrator of a group on Multiply, you may want to consider having at least some items be public so that when people come to check out your group, they get a sense of what it is like without having to join first.

If you reply to a person's post on their home page, then your reply will be private or public based on what the author of the post has set.  You can tell what the setting is for a post by looking in the upper right hand corner of the thread (underneath the date of the post).  If the thread is listed for "everyone" but you have a response that you'd like to be kept private, you can reply to the post but choose to send your reply only to the author of the thread.

So Multiply can be as private or public as you make it, except when you're on someone else's turf (in a group run by someone else or on a home page other than your own).

Thanks for the information, this was very helpful.

Specifically your statement I quoted is particularly true to me. I discovered Multiply via an article I read about online communities in Time magazine last summer. When I joined Multiply I didn't have a goal or focus on how I wanted to use Multiply. I had previously used MyFamily, but once it trolled over to a subscription based service I quit it.

Figuring out what I want out of Multiply and realizing the issues of privacy, especially how items can be googled that aren't set to private has been key in deciding where I want to go with my site. Thanks again Meg!

you're welcome, jason. thanks for bringing up the topic in the first place. ;-)

This is in regards to groups. How is it that most of the names in the member list are single names, but I can't do the same with my own. I see my first and last name listed. Also, how do you not show that your an administrator in a group. I have noticed that there is no administrator listed for this very group. How do you do this?

you'll notice that anyone that's a contact will be listed by both first and last name. anyone that's not in your network anywhere will come out only as a first name. again, this is for privacy reasons. multiply takes privacy pretty seriously.

when i look you up in the member list of this group, all i see for your name is Leo.

Also, how do you not show that your an administrator in a group. I have noticed that there is no administrator listed for this very group. How do you do this?

i don't think it's possible, i think that's only a glitch. in fact, when i first went to check and see if that's true, it didn't show member or admin at all. the whole column was gone. but when i went back later it was there. *shrugs* i don't know what's up with that, but those things Should be showing.

i don't think the identity of the admin should be hidden. if someone is having a problem in the group, the admin might be the only person who can help with it (by removing a member or simply making a comment to that member). if people don't know who the admin is, they won't know who to ask for that sort of help. also, if the admin leaves the group, a new admin may need to be selected. but if the admin is only "hiding" then the service guys are going to get a lot of useless messages asking about the admin status in a group.

That's one of the reasons why I was here asking if it was normal. I was in a group and wanted to point something out to the administrator, but I could only find members in the list. All of your answers were helpful to me, thanks.
barefootmeg wrote on Oct 15, '06
well, i just looked at the membership list again and it's not listing who's a member and who's an admin again. :-(

i'll mention it to the service guys.

I posted a video, marked it for an individual, listed the individual and now see others in my contacts viewing it. How come the other contacts can see the video I posted for only one contact?
barefootmeg wrote on Jun 15, '07
they shouldn't be able to see it. they can go to the URL, but if they haven't been allowed to see it, then they should just get the message that nothing is there.

why don't you ask one of them if they were able to see it or just got the error message. (their picture shouldn't be showing up on the page though, either, i don't think.)

you might want to check and make sure that the privacy settings are indeed as you thought they were. check with one of the people who shouldn't have been able to see it but their pic showed up. and if they saw it, and the privacy setting said they shouldn't have, then you should contact customer service.
reggaesamjam wrote on Jun 15, '07
Thanks for your advice. I have asked one but he has not replied. I checked the settings and they are correct. I'm not sure how to contact customer service but will try.
barefootmeg wrote on Jun 15, '07
You can contact the customer service folks by clicking on the "contact us" link at the very bottom of any page within multiply. There's a link from that page that will enable you to write to customer service.

Want some privacy, type in your multiply name to google or yahoo search engines. talk about privacy.
barefootmeg wrote on Jul 16, '07
your name will only show up on google if you've got posts that are set to "everyone." (or if you have posts on other sites or in other places that include your name.)

it is possible on multiply to post an amazing array of content that flies completely under the google radar.

How about viewing profiles anonymously? Will your username show up in their viewing history list once you visit their site when not signed in?
barefootmeg wrote on Jul 21, '07
if you're not signed in then your presence isn't recorded.
fancybags wrote on Jul 21, '07
I see. Thanks very much!

hi grace. this isn't really a privacy issue, but to answer quickly -- go to the group in which you are currently the admin, choose the other person (or other account that uses a different email address) as admin. then remove yourself from being admin.)

i'd recommend either the user support group or the administering multiply groups group for this kind of question in the future. :-)

I just uploaded my 360 blog. I don't want it all public for everyone. Do I have to go through each entry to change the settings, or is there a way to make all blog entries for my contacts only?

unfortunately, i think you have to do it one by one. :-(

it would be worth suggesting on muds that they add a feature that would allow you to change the privacy settings when you're importing.

multiply assumes that if you classify someone as a friend, then they're actually a friend of yours (and probably already know your last name and address). the idea is that since you have your friends and family on multiply, and they update their address when they move, you have an address book that automatically updates itself.

if, however, you keep your full name secret from the people you're close to (or you accept people as friends who you don't really know very well) then the best way to hide your identity is to change your information so that it doesn't show your true last name (change it to a period or something like that) and remove your address (by filling it in with a space or changing it to something that's inaccurate).

you can only get a new username by opening a new account.

you can change your real name by clicking on settings, then clicking on my account.
chrisakasweets wrote on Nov 4, '07
i noticed a friend had changed hers and then later changed it back.. i remember in the set up i put in chrisakasweets. i thought i could go back and edit it? am i wrong?
barefootmeg wrote on Nov 4, '07
am i wrong?
yes.

you can change the name that's associated with this user name. (you're currently listed as chris.) but you can't change your username.

Hello! Thank you and sorry if my question is duplicate. But I was not found answer to this question.
How to make my group from private closed status to public (for everyone)?
barefootmeg wrote on Dec 21, '07
for a group you need to get to the group profile. there should be a link for that in the group's welcome message, i believe. then edit the profile and the ability to change the privacy settings should be there.

Hi Meg, is there any way to make my viewing history private?
barefootmeg wrote on Feb 15
Hi Meg, is there any way to make my viewing history private?
it already is. :-)

YOU are the only person that can see your viewing history. if you want to verify this, sign out of multiply, then go look at your page. you'll notice it's not down there.

when you're signed out, you're seeing your page as anyone would see it who's not a contact. another way to do this is to click on the link at the bottom of the page that says "view this page as another user." you'll notice that the viewing history does't show up there either.

the viewing history is Just For You, so you'll know who's been visiting your page. :-)

if a person is not your contact (like me), then when you click on that person's headshot and the description pops up, or you go to that person's page, you'll find that only the first name is showing. the ONLY time your last name is shown to others is if you have accepted the person as someone you know and trust, in other words, if you've accepted them as a contact.

if you accept complete strangers as contacts, than you're risking your privacy entirely on multiply. multiply's privacy settings work best when you only accept those you trust as contacts.

your name is already automatically hidden from everyone except yourself and your trusted contacts.

to change your email address click on "settings" in the upper right hand corner of the page. then click on "my acount" and look for the line where your email is listed. to the right of that you'll see a link that says "update." click on that and update your email address.

if you were unable to confirm your email address and therefore confirm your account, you may need to contact customer service (see the "contact us" link at the bottom of the page).
