Getting the Most out of Multiply

Blog EntryHeadshotsMay 31, '05 8:26 PM
by Meg for everyone
One thing that bugs me on Multiply is when people don't upload a headshot.  That little Multiply guy with a big fat question mark on his face is just crying out to be replaced with something,... anything!

But when I've encouraged people to add a headshot, the most common response I've gotten is that they don't look good in pictures.

Well, pshaw!  That's no reason not to have a headshot.  Look at some of these headshots that I noticed around Multiply just today:

Notice that only one of these headshots shows a person's real face, but all of the headshots tell a bit about the person that's being represented.

Make Your Own Avatar:  There are several sites that enable you to make your own headshot (also called an avatar by some).  The first of the six headshots above is a great example of a "make your own" avatar. Here are some sites to check out:

Make a South Park version yourself
Create your own face -- this is the site that was used to make the pic in the upper left corner

Premade Avatars: Or use an avatar that someone else has already made up, either by selecting an image through google or through a site that posts several avatars to choose from such as the avatarity.

But WHY? You may not be convinced yet to upload some form of a headshot. But think about this.  For some people, this may be the main means of interacting with you -- through Multiply.  Most people are very visual and like to have something to link to a word or idea.  Until you give them a pic to link to you, you're just a big question mark in their mind.  So be kind to your Multiply friends and give them a little something to remember you by.

HOW?  There are two ways to change your avatar.

The first way is the easiest.  If you have just created a Multiply account and you still have the question mark headshot showing, there will be a link right over that headshot enabling you to add a new headshot.  Just click on that link.

If you've uploaded a headshot and now you want to change it, click on "customize my site" in the right rail of your site.  Now you'll see a button around your current headshot that says "edit."  Click on it.  This will take you to a page where you can either select an older headshot that you've uploaded, or you can upload a brand new headshot if you prefer.

Also, the dimensions for a headshot are 100 x 100 pixels. I've used PaintShop Pro to resize my headshot for that dimension to see how they look. But as you said meg you don't have to do this. This is just a bit of FYI for us compulsive people (grin).

I resized mine on some old video editing program on my old, old, old computer downstairs(I mean, like before I was born old)...but anyway, just get em to 100x100 I think yeh can even do it in appleworks, ill try it and let yeh know...
barefootmeg wrote on May 31, '05
ah, dude! you changed your headshot on me!

i liked the old one. this one needs a bit of a goatee or something. ;-)
captainproton wrote on May 31, '05
yep, go to file, then photo, pick a pic from iphoto, insert it, then ya can draw on it, resize it, whatever. if ya have a mac, i mean

I know, I played around with several options and what have you, couldn't get a design that remotely looked like a goatee. Guess if I was patient enough I'd just draw one on. :P
barefootmeg wrote on Jun 1, '05
to get a goatee click on facial hair on the left. then pick the "beard" tab on the upper right. there's four different goatees there. (i missed those tabs the first few times i played with that program. they're not there for every option.)

Thanks! I did miss that when I was playing around with it last night.

but I can't e-mail it when I click on the tab - how do I save it?
it's a flash image or something :/

when i make faces there, i save them with the "grab" utility that comes on all mac computers. i don't know what PC's have. i'm sure there's something similar.

wildnzack, when i click on the link you posted, i just get a multiply note that the thread has either been deleted or is otherwise hidden from view. it might not be set to "everyone."

Damn - I think it was because I was somewhat lazy with the linking - let me try again

I use the [PrtSc] or Print Screen button on the PC. This copies the visible screen to memory. Then I open Paint Shop Pro (or you can open which ever image manipulation software you use, even MS Paint) then I click "Paste". The image from my screen that I've captured I then crop and re-size, voila.

I agree, unfortunately only one of my local friends on here has even bothered to update their page and pictures. They still use MySpace (which I rather despise). The number one reason I do not like MySpace is that it is used for a huge amount of spam. Their so called 'message board' (aka Bulletin Board) is filled with nothing but constant spam. At least in Multiply you can regulate what your board contains and from who.

More people should use Multiply, but then again if more did then spam would likely increase to an explosive amount. I suppose the great people on here already are enough to inspire and enlighten. :)

I feel so ignorant but.. How do I change my headshot?? I wanted to add something but have no idea how to do it!!!
barefootmeg wrote on Aug 31, '06
to change your headshot, you need to click on the "settings" link that's currently located in the upper right hand corner of any page on multiply. (it didn't always used to be there. that's a recent development.)

now look for the link to change your headshot.

I keep hearing that My Space is bad, so I keep feeling better that I never tried it, and that I am now here on multiply. Lets hope multiply continues to be a safe from spam haven.

Now back on topic... I have experimented with changing headshots, but I see that it also changes them in all my old posts, from before the change. Another idea I'm thinking about, is using a coat of arms style or a flag type headshot. But as I said, if it changes them on all my old posts as well, then maybe I will just settle on one.
barefootmeg wrote on Oct 8, '06
i tend to have one main headshot that i keep up most of the time and a few other headshots that i change to once in awhile when i'm in a particular mood.

for example, i have a cartoon pic of a gal with the flu for when i'm feeling under the weather. and i have a picture of a penguin about to bang some cymbols together right over a sleeping polar bear for when i'm feeling mischievious.

although there are times i wish a certain headshot would remain behind with my post, even if i switch to another headshot, when it comes to keeping track of who is saying what, having all the headshots for one person being the same really helps.

click on "my site" at the top of any page.

click on "customize my site" at the top of your content (just to the left of your current headshot).

once you've clicked on that, a button will appear over your headshot that says "edit." click on that and add a new picture or change to an older picture. once you've done that, click "done" in the yellow bar at the top of your page and your whole site will go back to normal (and your headshot will be changed). :-)

that doesnt work with me... theres no "edit" button that toggles after i click on "cuztomize my site" ... i think this is something to do with my browse (mozilla firefox - latest) or my PC ... i mean does not support this java script... can't change my avatar...

you have firefox 2.0? it should be working, then. i've had it not work when i was using the old version of firefox, but as soon as i upgraded it worked just fine.

as dantcer would say, make sure you clear your cache. who knows if it will work, but it's worth a try.

does anyone have any other suggestions?
nostrajr wrote on Apr 21, '07
thanks for that brilliant idea! ... its with the browser ... i downloaded the latest mozilla (firefox 2.0) .. then its working... see, ive edited my head shot.. thanks thanks!!!

then i'm guessing it's a problem with your browser. are you running the latest version? if not, the customizing function doesn't always work.

i'm pretty sure there's a post on this somewhere in the user support group. so if upgrading the browser doesn't help, try checking over there and see if there are some other suggestions.

please help, you can see my headshot on the left of this box, and i can see it also on my headshot space on my own page. The problem is, viewed from another contact's page, the image that appears on their list is the same old question mark multiply icon. If it shows on my page and on this dialogue box while I'm the one using it..... why doesn't it appear on my friends' contact space?
barefootmeg wrote on Nov 23, '07
is the other contact viewing your page from the same computer that you're seeing it correctly from? or is the person using a different computer. i'd guess it's the latter and that your contact hasn't cleared their cache or refreshed the page lately. it's not multiply's problem, it's the contact's computer's.

hi, i have a problem with the headshot thing.. whenever i click the edit button on my headshot nothing will appear, i mean yes there will be another window but it won't load anything. anyone experience the same problem recently?

Every time I access my site the "add a headshot" screen appears. I already have a headshot I want on the page, but it asks every time and it's really annoying. Why does this happen, and how do I STOP it?
barefootmeg wrote on Jan 1
have you recently changed our theme or added any new code to the welcome message? if so, try removing whatever the latest addition was and see if that fixes the problem.
cathecd wrote on Jan 1
No, I haven't. It's done this since I first signed up and started customizing the page with profile and such.
barefootmeg wrote on Jan 1
hmmm, you edit your profile in a different section than where you customize your site.

have you cleared our cache and removed cookies? i wonder if that might help? if not, you might want to contact customer service and see if they can figure it out.

Cache, yes - cookies, no - I don't want to have to re-sign onto all my sites.

i usually have response within a week. it's possible that you've tried to contact them when they've been swamped. i've had very quick responses this week. it's worth a try. the worst that can happen is that no one responds, right?

also, it might be worth starting a new note with this question. many people who might have more of a clue what to do than i do may have looked at this thread eons ago when it was first posted and now they ignore it. but if you post something new, they'll see it and might be able to help.

i could give you the link, but if you haven't updated your browser and the "customize my site" doesn't work on your site, then even when you click on the link you'll still have the same problems. the problem is not that you need a specific link but that you need to have the functionality on your computer that will enable the link to work.

have you updated your browser? did that help? what browser are you using? what version is it? have you tried another browser? did that work? what browser was it? what version was it? have you cleared your cache?

You might also want to try Firefox. It works well and, from what I hear, has fewer security issues than IE. And Multiply works well with Firefox. :-)
